Annual Traditions at Wesleyan Drive
Church Staff
Wesleyan Drive Baptist Church had the priviledge of ordaining Norman Carter, our Minister of Music. Rev. Tommy Jones and Rev. Carter have served together with several different Youth Interns over the past few years. Todd Wiggins, Stephen Ham, and Mark McMullen were a few of the fine young men with whom we were blessed. When Pastor Jones resigned to take part in another ministry, Rev. Norman Carter served as the Interim Pastor for eleven months until the church called Rev. Troy Dykes as our fifth pastor. Brother Norman is thankful to be back to being "just" the Minister of Music and Youth.
WEE Center Staff
The WEE Center was directed by Cheryl Brinson after Susan Milam's departure. Amy Heaton succeeded Mrs. Brinson. The church and WEE Center are now blessed by the dedication of Audra Hubbard who has served as the WEE Center Director for the past several years. The WEE Center enrollment is at full capacity and the parents are happy to have some wonderful teachers!
The Baptist Women coordinate several service opportunities such as gifts to the Bolingreen Nursing Home residents at Christmas, rice and canned goods to the Macon Baptist Association's food pantry, and other "as needed items." Most recently they provided lunches for over thirty teens from Roswell Methodist Church who used our church as a home-base for their four-day mission trip to Macon.
Baptist Men host a Valentine's Banquet every Friday before Valentine's. The men make all of the arrangements even down to serving the ladies at mealtime. Several years have featured live music. Recently the Baptist Men have begun having quarterly men's suppers which have been enjoyed by the attendees.
Upholding our strong committment to missions, the church continues to give to the Annie Armstrong and Lottie Moon Offerings, as well as the Cooperative Program of the Southern Baptist Convention. Each offering season is begun with an evening covered dish supper and a speaker on missions.
Every Easter finds members bringing flowers from their yards for the Blossoming of the Cross. While the handbell choir plays each church member files past the old rugged cross and adds their own blossom. By the end of the service the cross is blooming with the beauty of Easter. After church the children gather on the sidewalk for the annual Scripture Egg Hunt. Penny Shiflett coordinates the event and stuffs the hundreds of eggs needed.
Homecoming is celebrated on the first Sunday in May with a world-famous covered dish supper. Occasionally we have a guest preacher too. Recent years have featured former pastors Dr. John Gibson, Dr. Otis Andrews, and Rev. Hubert Whitten, as well as former youth intern Rev. Todd Wiggins who is now a pastor in North Carolina.
July brings Vacation Bible School to Wesleyan Drive. Directors and assistants over the past few years have included Margaret McCook, Phil Brown, Audra Hubbard, Amanda Cook, Amy Elton, Pam Long, and Sydeny Colvin with the assistance of the WEE Center Director. Themes have included Amazon Outfitters, The Great Kingdom Caper, Rickshaw Rally, Journey with Jesus, Bethlehem Village, Rome: Paul and the Underground Church.
Fall brings cooler weather and the annual Sunday School Roundup. This western themed fellowship is usually held on "fall back" Saturday in preparation for High Attendance Sunday.
The Sunday night before Thanksgiving will find members gathered around the tables for a Thanksgiving meal and a celebration of the Lord's Supper. This is always a special evening when we reflect on the wonderful blessings we have as a church family.
Christmas brings a flury of Sunday School parties; choir practices, preformances, and parties; and decorations in the sanctuary. Every Christmas Eve families gather for the Candelight Service.
Of course, all of these events are above and beyond the faithful Sunday School classes meeting for in-depth study, the spirit-moving morning worship services, the evening services of continued learning, handbell practice, RAs and GAs, the children and preschool choir classes, fellowship around the tables on Wednesday night with wonderful cooking, followed by a season of prayer, and choir practice. Learning, growing, and serving opportunities abound at Wesleyan Drive Baptist Church. Thanks for taking a look back at our history. Come join us as we move forward -- Kingdom Driven!
